Chamunda Devi Temple is located at a spot where the famous battle described in the Devi Mahatmaya took place. It is believed that demons named Shumbh and Nishumbh wanted to marry Devi Parvati and she refused. In anger they sent their generals Chand and Mund to get her or kill her. After a great battle, the goddess Kali slew the two demons, Chand and Mund. Delighted by Kali's achievement, Ambika declared that she would now be worshipped here as Chamunda a combination of the demons names Cha from Chand and Munda from Mund. The Chamunda Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh and is located 10 km west of Palampur in the Kangra area of the state. The temple was originally located in dangerous remote spot. It was relocated to its current location.Around 400 years ago, a king and a Brahmin priest prayed to Devi for permission to move the temple to some accessible location. Devi appeared to the priest in a dream giving her consent and she directed him to dig in a certain spot and an ancient idol would be found. That idol should be installed in the temple and worshipped as Her form. The king sent his army to bring the idol and the current temple was made.
